How to install IIS in Vista

May 11, 2007

If you want to make your system as a webserver you need to install IIS. It is included with Windows Vista but is not installed by default. Once it has been installed, it provides for basic Web server functionality and includes the WWW, FTP, NNTP, and SMTP services.

You can install IIS using the following steps:

Open the Programs option by clicking Start | Control Panel | Programs.

Under Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off.

Programs and Features

In Windows Features Expand Internet Information Services tree node, you can see that there are a lot of options beneath it. You will probably want to explore these options, because even if you click on IIS, some of the necessary options for doing development aren’t checked.

Windows Features

Once you’ve gone ahead and Checked the IIS items you want, and clicked OK, you’ll see this dialog for a while….

Now when you navigate in your browser to localhost, you’ll see the new default
page.
Localhost

Once IIS is installed, your computer running Windows Vista will be able to function as a Web server.

Hi, i have vista home basic and i had installed the IIS from your instruction, but when i type http:\\localhost in browser i got the following error………
Plz give me the solution ………..

Server Error in Application “Default Web Site”

    ——————————————————————————–

HTTP Error 404.4 – Not Found
Description: The resource you are looking for does not have a handler associated with it.

    Error Code: 0×80070002

    Notification: MapRequestHandler

    Module: IIS Web Core

    Requested URL: http://localhost:80/

    Physical Path: C:\inetpub\wwwroot

    Logon User: Anonymous

    Logon Method: Anonymous

    Handler: Not yet determined

    Most likely causes:

The file extension for the requested URL does not have a handler configured to process the request on the Web server.
    What you can try:

If the file extension does not have a handler associated with it, add a handler mapping for the extension.
Verify that the handler associated with the file extension is properly installed and configured.
Create a tracing rule to track failed requests for this HTTP status code. For more information about creating a tracing rule for failed requests, click here.
More Information… This error means that the Web server does not recognize the file extension of the requested resource. A module handler is not configured on the Web server for this extension. If the file extension being denied is required by the Web server, add the appropriate handler for the file extension.

Server Error in Application “Default Web Site”

    ——————————————————————————–

HTTP Error 404.0 – Not Found
Description: The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

    Error Code: 0×80070002

    Notification: MapRequestHandler

    Module: IIS Web Core

    Requested URL: http://localhost:80/test.htm

    Physical Path: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\test.htm

    Logon User: Anonymous

    Logon Method: Anonymous

    Handler: StaticFile

    Most likely causes:

The directory or file specified does not exist on the Web server.
The URL contains a typographical error.
A custom filter or module, such as URLScan, restricts access to the file.
    What you can try:

Create the content on the Web server.
    Review the browser URL.
Create a tracing rule to track failed requests for this HTTP status code and see which module is calling SetStatus. For more information about creating a tracing rule for failed requests, click here.
More Information… This error means that the file or directory does not exist on the server. Create the file or directory and try the request again.
