How to disable UAC in Vista ?

What is User Account Control (UAC) ?

User Account Control (UAC) is a feature in Windows that can help prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. UAC does this by asking you for permission or an administrator‌ password before performing actions that could potentially affect your computer’s operation or that change settings that affect other users.

UAC is undoubtedly annoying feature in Vista , seeming to pop up even when you try to open vista build in programs.But is does provides robust security solution, something XP and other version lacking.

But for the here and now , you can disable it and loose almost all the extra security strength offered by vista pretty quickly.

The simple way to disable is
1) Go to Windows Run Command ( winkey+r)
2) Type MSCONFIG and hit Enter
3) Once MSCONFIG window is Open , go to the tools tabs, scroll down to
“Disable UAC” , Click it and click the launch button. A little command prompt box will open and UAC is disabled.You need to restart the system for the change to take effect.

How to install IIS in Vista

If you want to make your system as a webserver you need to install IIS. It is included with Windows Vista but is not installed by default. Once it has been installed, it provides for basic Web server functionality and includes the WWW, FTP, NNTP, and SMTP services.

You can install IIS using the following steps:

Open the Programs option by clicking Start | Control Panel | Programs.

Under Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off.

In Windows Features Expand Internet Information Services tree node, you can see that there are a lot of options beneath it. You will probably want to explore these options, because even if you click on IIS, some of the necessary options for doing development aren’t checked.

Once you’ve gone ahead and Checked the IIS items you want, and clicked OK, you’ll see this dialog for a while….

Now when you navigate in your browser to localhost, you’ll see the new default
page.

Once IIS is installed, your computer running Windows Vista will be able to function as a Web server.

Microsoft Silverlight

Microsoft will soon be coming out with a direct competitor to the Adobe FLash , Silverlight -a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications (RIAs) for the Web. Silverlight is a lightweight subset of XAML for building rich media experiences on the web. It may be a drastic change to the online video market if Silverlight supports direct streaming from Media Player Servers and play WMV files without having to adorn a chrome over the video.

Silverlight is compatible with a range of browsers – Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox. Silverlight delivers a similar user experience on both IE 7 running on Windows Vista and Firefox running on an Apple Macintosh computer. In fact, a big benefit of the technology for end users is that they will not have to download different video player technology to view online media based on what OS they are running. Nonetheless, it may be noted that the Flash Player footprint is extremely small and user can still enjoy all that Silverlight will offer. There are no confirmation on the download size of the Silverlight yet. It may be a dramatic change to the online video market if Silverlight supports direct streaming from Media Player Servers and play WMV files without having to adorn a chrome over the video.

Microsoft would have their own plans to push the plugin to all Internet Explorer users and might even give precedence over the Flash Player in IE. Their marketing treasury is also good enough to do a stint big enough to draw enough market share. It may be noted that while the Flash Player was still with Macromedia, Macromedia did not spend as much on its whole product as much as Microsoft spend on advertising their products. Adobe is now big, however Microsoft still has the higher financial quotient to push their wares towards the masses in an unprecedented way. The only fallout may be of another lawsuit which Microsoft can live it.

Microsoft is expected to open a beta for Silverlight at its MIX 2007 around the end of April, 2007. They will announce plans for general availability at that time. Silverlight plugins can be downloaded for both Windows and Mac version. They even have some matching wallpapers for the Silverlight theme. The download URL comes complete with SDKs for Silverlight. You can also subscribe to their blog if you wish to keep up with the happening with Silverlight.

Subex Azure to acquire Canadian co for $164.5m

Just seven months after completing the biggest overseas acquisition in the Indian IT industry, Bangalore-based Subex Azure is now making news with a bigger one.

The company,which provides revenue maximisation solutions for telecom operators, said it has entered into a conditional contract to acquire Syndesis, a global provider of telecom OSS (Operations Support Software) solutions, in an all-cash deal.

The deal values Toronto-based Syndesis at $164.5 million based on TTM revenue of $ 45 million. Subex had earlier acquired UK-headquartered Azure Solutions for $140 million in June, 2006.

Fabmall.com buys Indiaplaza.com

Indian e-commerce company Fabmall.com has acquired US-based e-commerce portal Indiaplaza.com.
The combined e-commerce business will now operate under the global brand name Indiaplaza.

The acquisition is expected to create the world’s largest India-centric e-commerce business. The integrated business will be managed out of India. It will have operations and logistics both in India and US, a wide range of merchandise on offer and a 24-hour customer service centre in Bangalore.

By default when installing IIS 6.0 the virtual Scripts Folder is not created
Which is required for CGI Applications to execute1. Stop the IIS service .
2. Navigate to the ‘\Inetpub’ folder and create a new folder with the name of ‘Scripts’
3. Open the IIS Manager MMC Snap-in
4. Right click on the ‘Default Web Site’ and select New | Virtual Directory…
5. Click Next
6. Under Alias: type the name ‘Scripts’ and click Next
7. Under Path: type Drive Letter:\Inetpub\Scripts and click Next
8. Under Allow the following permissions: make sure that the following are selected
a. Read
b. Run Scripts (such as ASP)
c. Execute (such as ISAPI applications or CGI)
9. Click Next and click Finish
10. Right click on the Scripts virtual directory and go to Properties
11. Under the Virtual Directory tab make sure that the Execute Permissions: field is set to Scripts and Executables
12. Under the Directory Security tab click on Edit… under Authentication and Access Control and make sure
that the Enable anonymous access check box is checked

SQL Server 2005 is not automatically configured for remote access during installation

As I’ve ran into this problem , here’s a simple and quick summary of the actions you need to take to enable it

1) Enable the TCP/IP protocol using the Surface Area Configuration Utility
2) Make sure the TCP/IP protocol is enabled in the SQL Server Configuration Utility
3) Make sure the SQL Server browser is started. Note this step is optional. It is possible to set the SQL Server instance to use a fixed IP address – but this is non-standard for named instances.
4) Make sure SQL Server and SQL Server Browser are exempted by the firewall on the server machine. This is done by putting sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe as an exception in the windows firewall.
5) In order to get things to work. You might need to completely reboot the server machine after making the changes. There have been reports that starting and stopping the SQL Server and Browser software is not enough.
